Oak for joinery in Cyprus
Oak is the classic hardwood for joinery: strong, stable when properly dried, and beautiful with its distinctive grain.
Oak is used for kitchen fronts, doors, stairs, floors and furniture. European oak has a straight grain and a warm honey colour that deepens with age. It takes oils, hard-wax oils and lacquers well, and can be stained lighter or darker. In Cyprus, oak is most often used as veneer on stable boards or as engineered flooring, which reduces movement in changing humidity.
Pros
- Hard-wearing and durable
- Attractive grain that suits modern and classic styles
- Takes oils and stains well
- Can be sanded and refinished
Cons
- Moves with humidity if not properly acclimatised
- Solid oak costs more than veneer
- Tannins can react with iron fixings outdoors
